Indications :
• Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) (prophylaxis
and treatment)
• Ulcer, duodenal, Helicobacter pylori-associated (treatment adjunct)
Ulcer, gastric, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced (prophylaxis)
Consumption during pregnancy and lactation:
FDA Pregnancy Category B.
. It is not known whether esomeprazole is distributed into human milk. Because of potential for serious unwanted effects in the nursing infant, risk-benefit must be considered
Common side effects :
Those indicating need for medical attention:
Anaphylactic reaction, dermatologic reactions including; erythema multiforme; Stevens-Johnson syndrome; toxic epidermal necrolysis; pancreatitis.
2- Those indicating need for medical attention only if they continue or are bothersome:
• Incidence more frequent:
Dyspepsia
• Incidence less frequent:
Abdominal pain; application site reaction; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; dryness of mouth; flatulence (gas); headache; nausea; pruritus; respiratory infection; sinusitis.
Common side effects of drug interactions:
Esomeprazole, by inhibiting gastric acid secretion, has
the potential to affect the bioavailability of any medication for which absorption is pH dependent.
Amoxicillin or Clarithromycin (Co-administration with Esomeprazole may result in increased plasma levels of esomeprazole and 14-hydroxyclarithromycin).
• Ketoconazole or Iron salts or Digoxin (Esomeprazole may interfere with the absorption of these agents as it increases gastrointestinal pH)
• Warfarin
